Owner
and Creator of CED
and Violett and Gabby Lines Of Fashion Dolls
Doug James's entry into the Fashion doll world was completely
unexpected. Studying Theatre Arts in college, acting, directing,
costume and set design, he assumed his designs would be in
the larger scale rather than smaller.
Moving to Manhattan after graduation, Doug worked at the
Julliard School in the costume department as well as for
the Brooks-Van Horn Costume Co. He spent two seasons as
Artistic Director for the Shady Lane Playhouse, a professional
theatre company outside of Chicago.
Back in New York Doug has created millinery (hats) for
the broadway stage for Phantom of the Opera, Will Roger's
Follies, Guys and Dolls, Nine, Candida, Streetcar Named
Desire, St. Joan and the MUPPETS among others.
For several years Doug worked with John Noble at the Museum
of the City of New York restoring antique French fashion
doll clothing. He also made four one of a kind dolls that
were exhibited at the Museum of the City of New York.
Doug has worked on numerous films including Mona Lisa Smile,
Kevin Costner's Wyatt Earp, Wolf, Guarding Tess, Sabrina,
A Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island. At
this writing he is working on the new Angelina Jolie-Matt
Damon film.
For television Doug has made hats and costumes for Mourning
Becomes Electra for PBS, received an Emmy award for millinery
work for the daytime drama All My Children and for the past
14 years has been part of the wardrobe team for NBC's Saturday
Night Live for which he received another Emmy award.
Doug has also taught Theatrical Millinery classes for
graduate and under graduate students at Rutgers University
for the past 10 years.
In the Fashion doll and collectible doll world, Doug has
designed for the Gene doll for the Ashton-Drake Company,
Cissy for the Madam Alexander Company, Willow and Daisy
for the Knickerbocker Company and currently owns and operates
JDJ International, the company that produces the CED line
of fashion dolls.
